Rampini is the supplier of the zero emission buses of the European Pilot Project Life 3H for the Port of Civitavecchia

We are pleased to announce that we will be the supplier of zero emission buses of the European project Life 3h ("Hydrogen demonstration in city, port and mountain area to develop integrated hydrogen valleys"). The Port of Civitavecchia will be the destination of our 2 hydrogen-powered 8-metre buses. Engineer Fabio Magnoni underlined that "Life 3h is an opportunity to make sustainable travel in the areas chosen as Hydrogen Valleys, in order to reduce the impact of mobility on the environment and on everyone's health. This pilot project could only have taken shape in areas, which have already amply demonstrated their sensitivity towards eco-sustainability. For example, the Port of Civitavecchia - a symbol of the transition to zero-emission maritime mobility - hosted the world's first LNG ship and the first zero-emission ferry in port. Or the Campo Felice area - which, like its own region, Abruzzo, is a mountain town deeply involved in achieving energy and climate targets. At the same time, Life 3h for Rampini marks the actual birth of the hydrogen project, which will see us as the only Italian manufacturer of zero emission city buses."

LIFE3H

LIFE3H overall objective is to set up, demonstrate and exploit 3 Hydrogen Valleys starting from the implementation of clean H2 buses fuelled with surplus H2 coming from local industrial productions thus closing the economical circle locally. The project will demonstrate new transport solutions to increase air quality, reduce emissions, facilitating mobility, economic growth & environmental sustainability while protecting human, building and natural areas.

The sites for setting up the Hydrogen Valley are: (i) The historical City of Terni (near to one of the biggest Italian steel plant), (ii) Port of Civitavecchia (with millions of tourists per year and a historical port), (iii) the Altopiano delle Rocche (with ski resorts and part of the Regional Park Sirente Velino).

LIFE3H specific objectives are:

1) Build up the first 3 Italian HVs laying the basis of one transregional HV.

2) Develop common & sustainable road Local Public Transport mobility.

3) Implement integrated local policies & regulatory approaches for widespread deployment of Hydrogen Refuelling Stations and Fuel Cell vehicles.

4) Increase circular economy by storing and using H2 waste from local industries like steel and chlorine-soda plants;

5) Create a standard smart sustainable mobility management system;

6) Develop an Hydrogen Valley implementation strategy that allows extension and replication in other sites;

7) Raise citizens’ awareness & improving policy commitment in cultural-heritage locations on sustainable mobility, Hydrogen safety & air quality.

LIFE3H is coordinated by Regione Abruzzo with a partnership composed by a balanced mix of Public Bodies, Research Institutions, Industrial Partners and Consultancies. The project has a total cost of 6,339,853 € of which 2,978,671 € co-funded by EU programme LIFE 2020. LIFE3H started in September 2021 and will last 4 years.

What is a hydrogen valley?

Hydrogen Valleys typically comprise a realization across a defined geographic area of a substantial part of the hydrogen value chain, from hydrogen production, storage and transport to its end-uses
